Petition Summary

The petitioner argues that Article 50 TFEU must be interpreted in the strictest possible way so as to provide as much protection for its citizens as possible. The referendum is not legally binding on the parliament and amounts to no more than an opinion poll. In the petitioner’s view, the United Kingdom Government is acting contrary to the principles of the Lisbon Treaty by using an opinion poll as a justification for enacting Article 50. The result only accounts for the adult citizens who voted, and does not include the entire view of every British/EU citizen, a large percentage of whom will include young people below the age of 18. Therefore, there are a substantial number of European citizens who now face involuntary loss of their citizenship, and the opportunity to exercise their Treaty rights in the future. The petitioner considers that allowing a Member State to withdraw on such a slim majority fails to properly protect all the EU citizens that live in the UK and who desperately ask the EU Parliament for help in protecting their rights.
