Petition Summary

The petitioner considers that the UK population has voted without a proper understanding of the democratic accountability of the EU institutions. He blames both the media and the UK government for this. The petitioner also claims that the decision to invoke Article 50 of the Treaty on the European Union will deprive him of his EU citizenship under Article 20 (1) of that Treaty. He has no confidence that this action can be properly or fairly remedied in an action before the UK courts. The petitioner asks the European Parliament: (i) to investigate the UK referendum and to comment on whether it properly reflects the role of the EU institutions and the inter-governmental aspects of EU governance; (ii) to decline to accept the UK’s Article 50 notice on the grounds that it has no democratic validity; and (iii) to make arrangements for safeguarding the interests of the 48% of UK voters who voted against leaving the EU. For instance, by offering facilities for UK nationals who want to apply to other Member States for residence and accelerated rights to national citizenship to ensure that they can continue to be EU citizens.
