Petition Summary

The petitioner explains his own situation as a UK citizen residing in France (where he pays taxes and has his business). The main centre of his financial interests remains in the UK and he is highly concerned about his future status, residence and the continuation of his rights as conferred by article 20 (2) (a) of the TFEU. He considers that the UK government has failed in its duty to safeguard his interests as a UK national. On the basis of articles 20 (1) and 21 (2) of the TFEU, he concludes that his status as a citizen of the Union is an exclusive competence of the EU and that the EU institutions have the power to enact legislation to confer citizenship of the Union on an individual in order to safeguard his rights. He therefore requests from the European Parliament and the Commission to establish the right to apply for citizenship for those nationals of UK currently residing in another Member State.
